ETO Sterilizer

Ethylene oxide or ETO sterilizers are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry and health care institutions to sterilize products/materials sensitive to eto-sterilizermoisture or heat.
EtO sterilization is mainly used to sterilize pharmaceutical products that cannot support high temperature steam sterilization like devices and instruments that incorporate electronic components, plastic containers or plastic packaging. Pharmaceutical industry make use of varied sterilizers like CIP sytem or steam sterilizers. ETO sterilizer is one of the most popular pharmaceutical sterilizers.
 
What is Ethylene oxide?
Ethylene oxide or ETO is a chemical used in the pharma industry to sterilize medical devices. It is also used to make other chemicals. Ethylene oxide is colorless and considered a relatively toxic liquid and gas. It can be mixed in all proportions with water, ethers, alcohols, and other organic solvents.
 
ETO Sterilization in Pharmaceutical Industry
EtO gas filters packages as well as products to kill micro organisms that are left during production or packaging processes. This gas, mixed with air at a ratio of at least 3% EtO gas, forms an explosive mixture, potent in killing pathogens. Consisting of electrical heating jackets, these sterilizers provide excellent steam and temperature distribution in the heating chamber. The machines are also equipped with automatic temperature control mechanism, in which bacteria die from the coagulation or de-naturation of the protein constituents.
 
ETO Sterilization Process

The SIP Process

Dry Heat Sterilizer

Dry heat sterilizers are one of the most popular pharmceutical sterilizers. One of the earliest forms of sterilization practiced, dry heat sterilization, as the name dry-heat-sterilizerssuggests uses hot air that is either free from water vapour, or has very little of it and it doesnot play any role in the process of sterilization.
 
 
Dry Heat Sterilization in Pharmaceutical Industry
Dry heat sterilizers are mainly used for sterilizing various pharmaceutical products including ampoules, injection bottles, infusion bottles and production equipment. These sterilizers use dry heat and are better than the steam sterilizers in the sense that the process does not corrode the machine.This is also used to sterilize liquids with low moisture content and also for treatment of medicated powders. The process completely destructs all micro-organisms and does not cause any environmental pollution or inconvenience to humans. Usually made of stainless steel, the shape and position of heating elements in the chamber ensure uniform temperature distribution. The entire process includes drying, heating, sterilizing and cooling phase.
 

Dry Heat Sterilization Process
  • Place pharmaceutical instruments and items in the oven, and start the oven as per the designated temperature. The oven must has a temperature gauge or thermometer to ensure the designated temperature is reached.
  • The machine cleans, decontaminates, dries all instruments and other items to be sterilized.
  • Leave items in the sterilizer to cool before removing. When they are cool, the items need to be removed using sterile pickups and used or stored immediately. Proper storage is as important as the sterilization process itself.
 
 
Maintenance of Dry Heat Ovens
Maintenance of dry-heat ovens should alwyad be an integral part of every dry heat sterilization procedure. It is ti be noted that sterilization will not be achieved if the ovens do not reach the correct temperature .  Make sure:
  • That your oven is kept clean at all times.
  • Check the temperature gauge on a regular basis so that it is working properly. This can be done by putting a thermometer in the oven and comparing the temperature reading with the one on the gauge.

Pharmaceutical Boilers


A boiler is actually a closed vessel in which water or other fluid is heated for the required purpose. The heated or vaporized fluid exits out of the boiler for use in various processes or heating applications. These pharmaceutical boilers are popularly known as steam boilers. Pharmaceutical boilers are steam generating systems used in various types of pharmaceutical and other applications.
 
Working of Pharmaceutical Boilers
This steam generating device consists of two principal parts: A furnace for providing heat by burning fuel or using electricity and a unit for converting water into steam. The steam is recirculated from the boiler for different heating applications. However the functioning of boilers is different from steam sterilizers or SIP sytem which are used for sterilzation process.

Magnetic Stirring Vessel


Magnetic Stirring Vessels or Magnetic stirrers are one of the most used magnetic mixer in pharmaceutical industry. The mixing equipment consists of an impeller, bearing, welding plate, drive unit and control box for efficient and high quality mixing of raw material and particles.
 
A magnetic stirrer consists of a small bar magnet, also known as stir bar; this plastic coated bar magnet is placed in a vessel for efficiently stirring liquids. The rapidly rotating magnetic field causes the bar magnet to spin at a high speed. Magnetic stirring vessels are preferred over motor driven stirrers as they are more efficient, have no moving parts that break down or wear out and are quieter. Being small in size, these stirrers are easy to maintain, clean and sterilize than other devices. As opposed to the motor driven stirrers, magnetic stirrers do not contaminate the vessel as they do not use any lubricants.
 

How Magnetic stirrer works:
The bar magnet is placed in a vessel containing liquid which is to be stirred. At the top of the stand, vessel is set in such a way, where the rapidly rotating magnetic field causes the bar magnet to rotate, which finally results in the stirring of the liquid. Because of its small size magnetic stirrer, this device is preferred in laboratory experiments.
